But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7
Samuel was painfully sorry that God had rejected Saul from being king over Israel and feared that Saul would kill him if he attempted to anoint someone else as king. Nevertheless, God informed Samuel that He had chosen David as king and instructed Samuel to anoint him. However, Samuel did not think that David LOOKED like king material.
Right or wrong, we are judged by the way we look and dress.
There is a clear difference between how the people of God dress from church to church. Some prefer to dress down or casual, jeans, shorts and no ties. While others choose to get fly, suited down, and wear designer hats. Some women won't attend a church if they can't wear pants. And, many frown on the preacher who dresses "too cool."
Should Christians adopt a conservative dress code? Will that heighten their ability to live holy? Be more faithful and exemplary? Should it be a matter of personal preference?
"The Bible's rules about dress cannot be applied directly to today's situation. Attending church in a cloak, tunic, sandals and a turban or veil would cause quite a disruption in most churches! But the general principles of modesty and propriety can be applied. We should dress for public worship in a way that is generally considered appropriate. Standards of dress change over time and are different from church to church, but we should avoid any style of dress that is offensive or sends a message opposing the church community's values." What Does The Bible Say About Proper Dress?
